Anatase Titanium Dioxide
Anatase is the softer, sulfuric-acid-process crystal form of TiO₂ — lower refractive index than rutile, but a lower processing hardness that suits certain fiber and food-contact-grade applications where outdoor weathering resistance is not the deciding factor.
Anatase properties
Where anatase fits, and where rutile is the better choice
Anatase TiO₂ is produced by the sulfuric-acid process and has a lower refractive index (around 2.55) than rutile (around 2.7), giving it somewhat lower opacity per unit loading. It also has higher photocatalytic activity, meaning it degrades under prolonged UV exposure faster than rutile — making it less suited to outdoor or long-term-weathering applications. Its main commercial use in CIVAL’s range is B-101, a general sulfuric-acid-process anatase pigment.
- Softer crystal structure — can suit certain low-abrasion processing needs
- Lower cost profile — typically positioned below rutile grades for indoor or non-weathering use
- Not recommended outdoors — higher photocatalytic activity means faster chalking and color loss under UV
- Sulfuric-acid process — B-101 is CIVAL’s reference anatase grade
| Grade | Process | Type | Best suited for |
|---|---|---|---|
